STORY:

Kuba cloth is the traditional fabric made by the Kuba people of central Africa. While their unique aesthetic has manifested in a variety of art forms-from basketry to scarification-Kuba cloth is perhaps the most famous. The word “Kuba” means “lighting” referring to the blades that were once used by Kuba warriors. These tactile cloths from the Congo are each handcrafted in the traditional way, the men weaving on a small hand loom and the women taking great pride in their embroidering of these squares. Most clothes are a variation on rectangular or square pieces of woven palm leaf fiber enhanced by geometric designs executed in linear embroidery and other stitches, which are cut to form pile surfaces resembling velvet. Women are responsible for transforming Kuba cloth into various forms of textiles, including ceremonial skirts, ‘velvet’ tribute cloths, headdresses and basketry. 

Inspired from their rich history of textiles, hand weaving techniques and beautiful motifs, we have created this pattern on dhuti borders in Shantipur looms. And, have named them after the place they have drawn inspiration from.
