STORY:
Shantipur has been famous for its elegant designs inspired from nature and some of them are named as ‘Bhomra’, ‘Terchi’, ‘Rajmahal’, ‘Chandmala’, ‘Gont’, ‘Dorokho’, ‘Nilambari’, ‘Ganga Jamuna’, ‘Ans par’, ‘Moi par’ etc. Shantipuri cotton find its place in traditional fabrics of West Bengal due to its elegant look, elaborated design details and typical loom finish. Shantipur is especially known for superfine dhotis and saris with jacquard designs. Handloom textiles made at Shantipur in the late 1800s were woven on throw shuttle pit looms with manually spun cotton yarn. Shri Darga Das Kastha introduced barrel dobby between 1920 and 1925, paving the way for the fly shuttle. As the weavers were accustomed to this approach, Shri Debbendra Nath Mukherjee introduced the jacquard machine, which allowed for additional saree / dhuti border designs. In the twentieth century, Shri Jatindra Nath Lohori established a 100 hook capacity jacquard to produce a variety of Shantipur Dhutis and sarees.
