Story: As a young girl, my feelings towards Sarbajaya oscillated between aloofness and anger. Her bias towards her son, her indifference towards Indir Thakuran, her angry outbursts on her daughter Durga didn’t make me look at her with empathy or tenderness. It was during one of my pregnancies, I watched Pather Panchali again. And, the way I looked at Sarbajaya changed forever. I perceived her as a mother.   

I began to find justifications for almost everything she did as a mother, as a wife, as a woman.

I was amazed by her grit, her endurance and above all her patience. She reminded me of John Milton’s words – “They also serve who only stand and wait.”

We recreated her saree in Shantipuri weave. She wore that saree almost in the entirety of the film. This saree is also our tribute to Ray who turned 100 this year. The sturdiness of humble Bengal cotton and a Bengali woman, both standing the tests of time was beautifully depicted in that saree. We added the stripes in colours of the Royal Bengal Tigress. Because that’s what she truly was.
